Personalized Online Tutoring
Of all the language skills taught in school -- reading, writing, speaking, listening -- listening is the most neglected. It's also the most immediate way we make sense of the world. I believe it's necessary for students, parents, and educators to cultivate online learning communities that emphasize listening as a direct response to what is NOT happening in the typical classroom.
Diminishing attention spans coupled with a tsunami of information, social media, new technologies, and traditional classrooms struggling to catch up with it all, young people require special guidance on developing a "filter of focus" that helps them navigate a good path in creating their future.
For an hour a week, The Listening Tutor can not only accelerate English Language Arts skills for school, but help them determine a clearer, stronger path for their life.
How does online tutoring work?
STEP 1: Listening to you as a parent
As a parent, you are the expert on your child. I'm interested in listening to your concerns, your hopes, and your values, so we can create a solid foundation of learning for your son or daughter. I'm also happy to answer any questions you may have about my philosophy, my approach, and how we might measure progress. This initial call is completely free. If it's a good fit, we can schedule a Zoom with your child. No pressure. No obligation.
STEP 2: Listening to your child
My work is relationship-based and personality-driven. Therefore, along with some light diagnostic testing, my first session with students is about building trust and rapport. As an entryway for our work together, I'm looking to identify their tastes -- their interests, their music, their sense-of-humor, etc.
STEP 3: Tutoring
Typically, tutoring sessions are an hour long at a regular time every week. The content of the session is driven by your child's curiosity. By connecting to their interests, their listening skills are activated. We attempt to sustain this focus throughout the session. Success oftentimes is measured by how your child sustains this focus in between sessions.
